A cheer rang out as Doncaster poet David Harmer cut the ribbon to launch our new school library. It was a fine end to a brilliant day in school, made all the better by some eye-popping costumes as children and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters.
The day got off to a great start as David told us about himself and why he started writing. He then performed some of his poems for us and encouraged everybody to join in. "Mr Moore" - a poem about one of his old teachers - was one of our favourites because we had to make the sound effect of Mr Moore's shoes creaking down the corridor.
David spent the rest of the day running poetry workshops during which children worked together to write group poems. Parents were invited to come and listen to the results in our end-of-day assembly and it was great to see them joining is as well!
We all saw the funny side of David's poems!
Some of us brought our favourite books along...
Y5 and Y6 had a fantastic end to the half term when they went down to Totley Library to meet children's author Jon Mayhew. Jon told us about his books, written in the gothic horror style, which have received rave reviews over the past year or so. He let us know about what inspires him to write and the books and films which influenced him as he grew up. As well as reading an extract from his book, Mortlock, Jon challenged us to solve a series of riddles to test whether or not we could outsmart any of his demons. Those who passed the test received a signed poster! So thank you Jon and Totley Library for a brilliant afternoon.
PHEW - WHAT A SCORCHER!
In gloriously warm and sunny conditions, the Y6s had an amazing time on their residential trip to Thornbridge last week. The children were brilliant throughout the trip and tackled all the challenges they faced with determination and a great attitude towards teamwork. They were certainly happy, happy campers!
For more details and photos, please visit the Y6 blog.
Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances there will not be a supervised crossing warden on Baslow Road for the remainder of this week. We hope the patrol will resume next week although we will keep you informed either via this site or the text messaging service.
The Y5s had a stunning start to their topic on Ancient Egypt with an action packed day of role play, dancing and craft activities. Led by the grand high vizier, children were chosen to play important roles, such as the Pharaoh Ramases and his Queen Nefertari, guards, taskmasters, dancers and tomb robbers! In a special ceremony at the end of the day, the gifts we had made were presented to the mighty pharaoh to go with him into the afterlife.
Well done to the children, who put an incredible amount of effort into their costumes, and who were well behaved and enthusiastic throughout. We learned a huge amount about many Egyptian beliefs and customs - what a way to kick start the year!
All bow before the Pharaoh and his queen!
The entire school enjoyed a great day in Millhouses Park for the inaugural Totley Duck Race.
Over 400 ducks had been sold and anticipation was high as the children walked or caught the bus to the park. After a play on the climbing equipment, a few games of cricket, rounders and football and a hearty lunch, we made our way to the stream and the race began.
The day was a fitting end to a great term and we were very lucky with the weather.
A big thank you to all members of the PTA for their help with the event and a particular thank you to the Grayson family for all their hard work. I'm sure the event will become a Totley tradition!
The Year 5 children enjoyed a fantastic weekend at the Kingswood Outdoor Pursuits Centre at Penistone. They spent the weekend abseiling, 3G swinging, solving problems and dancing the night away at the disco.
The behaviour was exemplary and we were thanked for bringing such a well mannered and polite group of children. Well done Y5s, we were proud of you!
What a fantastic day the Summer Fun Day was!
Everyone enjoyed fun and games organised by the PTA and the junior children. With face painting, tennis, paintballing, hook-a-duck, a bouncy castle and slide to name but a few! The gymnastic teams gave a display and showed us why they have been so successful in recent competitions and the Y5 children showed off their cornet playing skills. Also performing were dancers from King Ecgberts and Gemini dance school and the choir. We were lucky enough to have a look around a visiting fire engine and police car and police dogs gave a display.
A fantastic selection of home baked cakes were enjoyed along with a BBQ (many thanks to Liberty Farm Foods for the superb burgers).
Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this Summer Fun Day the best yet.
Take a look at the slide show below to see just some of the highlights of the day.
